UNSOCIAL MEDIA

Isn’t it ironic, don’t you think, that we’ve all seemingly gravitated towards this collective self-loathing over our obsession with social media to the point that we are now posting admonishing or other finger-pointing-type memes about the pitfalls of said obsession on our social media platforms?

Seriously, we’re like moths to a flame with our smart phones, tablets, laptops or whatever. If it’s there we have to look at it, even if what we’re looking at is utter drivel, which it mostly is. I saw one today – yes, I know – that said ‘We’re swamped by information yet devoid of wisdom’. How true! I mean, how many times can you watch that clip of an athlete falling down hard on a race, getting up and continuing to run, with the video clip culminating in treacle about her inspiration and heroism?

I don’t know how many times as schoolboys my friends and I hit to dirt hard during sporting events, lost bark, bled, got concussed, got up and got on with it. No one filmed it. It wasn’t inspirational. It wasn’t heroic. It was just life. You might have been lucky enough for one of the parents to call out from the sidelines, ‘Up you get mate.’ And, off you’d go again. Do we really need to see that over and over? No, we don’t.

THE NEXT BIG THING

My fellow author and Momentum compadre, Nathan Farrugia, had asked me before Christmas to participate in a blog challenge doing the rounds amongst some writerly types called 'The Next Big Thing'. I like that it's creating a collective online record of what writers are working on at this point in time - what is, in my humble view, a pretty exciting time to be involved in the publishing industry.

For what it's worth, here's my two cents on the latest goings on from deep within the Chez Allen mancave.

WHEN A TRIBUTE VIDEO GOES VIRAL

On the eve of the Defender book launch, checking out all our social media channels, dotting i's and crossing t's, we head over to IntrepidAllen's channel on YouTube.

A surprise awaited.

The Defender tribute video, made by Alex Hermes from the rockin' band Bullethead, has had in excess of 40,000 pairs of eyes on it. And growing!

They released this extended version of their popular song 'Promise Made' in 2011 as a tribute to the novel, which refers to the Intrepid team as 'Defenders of the faith', complete with video film clip that interpreted some of the book's meatier scenes!

AND THE WINNER OF A CHARACTER IN HUNTER IS...

What a fantastic Photo Comp we've had over the past couple of weeks to choose a person to have a character named after them in the new book! After some very enthusiastic voting for all our Defenders who posted photos of them in far-flung places, the winner was action man Brett Tappin, who crews helicopters offshore and whose winning photo was taken in a chopper above the Solomon Islands.
